Guiding eateries on nutrition

THE Health Ministry will give free nutritional consultancy services to food premises under the Clean, Safe and Healthy (BeSS) programme, said Selangor Health Department director Datuk Dr Khalid Ibrahim.

The service comes together with a compliance agreement on BeSS procedures requiring food operators to abide by food safety and hygiene, not only within their premises but also of their suppliers.

“We will assign a nutritionist to study their menus, provide guidelines on salt and fat content and give them the calorie count of the different dishes. The results can be given within three days,” said Dr Khalid at the BeSS award presentation at [email protected]

He added that food premises with a Grade A rating from Sepang Municipal Council or have scored 85% and above from MoH health inspections can apply.

Dr Khalid presented BeSS certificates to 47 food and beverage outlets at the airport mall during the ceremony.

Congratulating the award recipients, he said those running food outlets were doing more than providing food and beverage to travellers. They were also culinary ambassadors for the country.

“So, I cannot stress more on the importance of food safety standards for the restaurants operating here,” he said, adding that application for BeSS recognition is free.

It was learnt that the ministry awarded the BeSS certificates to the award recipients after carrying out spot checks.

The judging took into account nutritional value in food content and waste management practices like the cleanliness of grease traps, kitchen vent hoods and exhaust systems.

This year, the ministry conducted routine spot checks on 13,079 food premises in Selangor, closing down 360 for unhygienic practices.

In KL International Airport, only five premises out of 510 premises failed to obtain a clean bill from MoH.

The BeSS programme started in 2013. To date, 643 food premises in Selangor have been given this recognition. The certificate is valid for three years and is not compulsory for licensing application with the local council.

Food operators in Selangor keen on getting the free services of a nutritionist can call 03-5123 7333 or the district health office in their respective areas.
